Brazil’s Rousseff, Mulling Jet Deal, Touts Defense

first_img Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, who is deliberating a multi-billion dollar jet fighter deal, defended the need to spend money on defense at a time when she is making big budget cuts in other areas. Rousseff’s comments at a military ceremony in Brasilia are one of the clearest signs to date that she could move forward soon on a deal to buy at least 36 fighter jets from either U.S.-based Boeing, France’s Dassault Aviation or Sweden’s Saab. “A totally developed Brazil will need equipped, trained, modern Armed Forces,” Rousseff said. “Defense cannot be considered a lesser element on the national agenda.” Some critics have suggested that Rousseff should postpone the purchase of the warplanes until 2012 or later given that she just announced $30 billion in cuts in other areas to cool Brazil’s booming economy. Yet Rousseff told the audience it would be a “big mistake” to consider spending on upgrading military technology to be an “idle effort.” Rousseff said that Brazil needs a strong military to defend its new offshore oil reserves, as well as guarantee the security of the vast Amazon region. The aircraft deal has become one of the most hotly disputed trade and diplomatic issues under Rousseff’s administration, which took office on 1 January. She has cast the deal as a way to modernize Brazil’s Air Force as well as consolidate strategic partnerships over the coming decades. Rousseff’s recent actions and declarations have indicated she is leaning toward purchasing Boeing’s F-18, and U.S. President Barack Obama pushed the deal on a visit to Brasilia last month. However, Dassault and Saab have also expressed confidence that their bids are stronger, especially on transfers of proprietary technology that Rousseff has said are crucial to her decision. To defuse criticism of her budget priorities, Rousseff could announce the winner of the tender in coming months but defer any expenditures until 2012, or seek financing that would lessen the short-term blow of the purchase to government accounts. Top four, Thierry Henry’s record & Golden Boot: What’s up for grabs ahead of Project Restart

first_imgKlopp and co. are chasing the title (Picture: Getty)The Reds are also in the frame to surpass City’s record points tally – set two seasons ago. Should Liverpool win all nine of their remaining fixtures they will end the campaign on 109 points – nine clear of City’s 100-point record. Six wins from nine would draw them exactly level. With Liverpool out of the Champions League and FA Cup, they only have the league to play for so they can make a real push to state their claim to be the greatest Premier League team of all time.Champions League spotsWith Manchester City facing a ban from European competition, fifth place could be enough to secure a Champions League spot, however, teams will be determined to clinch a top-four position to guarantee entry. Liverpool and Manchester City look set to finish in the top-two, with Leicester currently closer to City than fourth-placed Chelsea. Then, it’s very tight. Solskjaer and Lampard’s teams are in the mix for top-four (Picture: Getty)Three points separate Chelsea and Manchester United, with ninth-placed Arsenal probably the lowest-placed side with a realistic chance of catching Frank Lampard’s men. Alongside the usual suspects of United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs, Wolves and Sheffield United are also in the mix. Should Sheffield United beat Villa in their first game back, they will leapfrog United into fifth, just two points behind Chelsea.Champions League qualification could also come through the European competitions, with Manchester United and Wolves probably the most realistic bets in the Europa League. Europa League placesThe same bunch will likely be in the hunt for Europa League spots, barring inspired runs from the likes of Everton, Burnley and Crystal Palace. Sixth place will be enough to guarantee European football after City won the EFL Cup, while the FA Cup place could still yet be drafted back into the league. AdvertisementAdvertisementIf City’s ban is upheld and one of the already-qualified teams wins the FA Cup then Europa League qualification could go as low as eighth place so there’s plenty to play for on that front.RelegationThere’s equally plenty to play for at the other end of the table. There are eight points separating the bottom six, with just two points spanning 16th-19th. Should 19th-placed Aston Villa win their game in hand against Sheffield United on Wednesday, they will leapfrog West Ham, Watford and Bournemouth into 16th.More: Manchester United FCRio Ferdinand urges Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to drop Manchester United starNew Manchester United signing Facundo Pellistri responds to Edinson Cavani praiseEx-Man Utd coach blasts Ed Woodward for two key transfer errorsRock-bottom Norwich City aren’t cut adrift yet, but they are four points behind Villa and six points from safety, while 15th-placed Brighton are only two clear of the relegation zone. Southampton and Newcastle look safe, having hit the 34 and 35-point marks respectively – with nine games still to play – so it will likely be between Norwich, Villa, Bournemouth, Watford, West Ham and Brighton to occupy the three relegation spots.Golden Boot There is also a battle to be the league’s top scorer. Leicester’s Jamie Vardy leads the way on 19 goals, with Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang just two goals behind, while Liverpool and Man City attackers Mohamed Salah and Sergio Aguero have already notched 16 league goals. Southampton’s Danny Ings has been the surprise package of the season, scoring 15, he’s one in front of Liverpool’s Sadio Mane and Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford – who is fit again after a back injury.Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham, Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Wolves’ Raul Jimenez (all 13 goals) are rank outsiders to top the scoring charts.AdvertisementThierry Henry’s assist recordA less-celebrated battle for supremacy takes place for those at the top of the assists chart. Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne is four clear of Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold (who is four ahead of third-placed Riyad Mahrez) and looks likely to be crowned the league’s assist king – but he also has a long-standing record within his sights. No ball has been kicked in English football’s top flight since Monday 9 March, when Leicester City hammered Aston Villa 4-0, before the coronavirus pandemic forced the season to be paused. Relegation-threatened Villa will also be the first team back in action this Wednesday, when they face Champions League hopefuls Sheffield United – a match that could have plenty of implications at both ends of the table. With nine full gameweeks to go, there’s an awful lot left to play for in Project Restart – here’s a reminder of what’s still up for grabs. AdvertisementAdvertisementADVERTISEMENTTitle and points recordYes, Liverpool could still technically miss out on a first Premier League title – but it seems virtually impossible. Jurgen Klopp’s men have a commanding 25-point lead over nearest rivals, and defending champions, Manchester City and it would take a phenomenal meltdown for them to fail to lift the trophy come the end of the season.Liverpool need just two wins to secure the title and could possibly do it in their first game back – against bitter local rivals Everton – should Pep Guardiola’s City lose to Arsenal on Wednesday night. The pair have exchanged a bit of banter about the record and De Bruyne seems incredibly motivated to surpass the French World Cup winner.Golden GloveThis year’s Golden Glove – the award handed to the goalkeeper with the most clean sheets – is a very tight affair. Burnley’s Nick Pope leads the way after 11 shutouts so far, but Dean Henderson will draw level with him if Sheffield United keep Aston Villa at bay on Wednesday. Advertisementlast_img read more

first_imgManchester United fans should not be getting carried away with their recent run of good form, Andy Gray has warned.United have bounced back from a poor start to the season to move up to fourth in the Premier League with four successive victories. But Gray insists Louis van Gaal still has plenty to prove and he believes Southampton can end the Red Devils’ winning run on Monday night.Speaking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, he said: “Although they have had four wins in a row, three of them were against Crystal Palace, Hull and Stoke, and you would expect a decent United side to win those three games.“The only team of any note they have beaten was Arsenal and they were second best for massive spells.“They are far from back Manchester United and I think it is a game Southampton will fancy.”last_img read more

In 2007, when Mansi came back to India from Australia with a masters degree in film, she decided to convert the spare bedrooms in her new home into a B&B. She then applied for a license from the Ministry of Tourism and that’s how House of Kapaali was born. Soon after, her younger sister Suhani quit her job as a freelance production coordinator with a leading sports channel to join House of Kapaali as well. During its conception, the sisters had a certain mood in mind that they wanted to give to the space.”House of Kapaali is modern-vintage, picking up the essence of the mid-century modern era,” says Mansi. Both the girls believe ‘the devil is in the details’, and that is why each and every piece of furniture and fixture has been sourced painstakingly and emotes the House of Kapaali feeling, creating an experience that is seamless, luxurious, yet at it core, soulful. Dressed in subtle metallic shades from head to toe, Bhagwati stands out from the stiff-collared corporate lawyers that surround her at the office of a well-known law firm in Delhi designed by her.Her love for creating the extraordinary inspired Bhagwati to take a state transport bus to enrol herself at the Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology University, Ahmedabad when she was just a teenager, and 30 years on, the love affair continues. “The building of my alma mater was one that grew on me. Unconsciously, it would manifest in my projects,” says the architect. Lamenting the lack of women in her field, Bhagwati agrees that architecture is a profession that is largely male dominated. Another shift she observes in her field is the break away from the tradition of the master builder, where one architect would envision the entire project. “Now the architect is a mere conceptualiser, working in a team of technologists, visualisers and structural teams,” she rues.Among the many structural marvels created by Bhagwati, the vibrant Adobe headquarters in Noida is one that has been included in many lists of India’s best architectures, commended for its fluid and unconventional design. With many other projects underway in the NCR, the architect who has also researched urban metamorphosis, urges on the need for a facelift of the region. “Integrated mass transit, seamless pedestrian movement, multilevel parkings, creating public spaces and bringing in private parties to regulate these spaces is the way forward for Noida,” says Bhagwati.
