AA: Of course we do, but there’s no use in complaining about it. People have underestimated us all year, and we just continue to win. We’re used to playing the underdog role, so this is nothing new. DN: What do you hope to prove over the next few weeks? A 5-foot-11 post player on the Grant of Van Nuys girls’ basketball team, Amirkhanyan has registered team highs of 13.6 points and 10.5 rebounds per game for the Lancers. She’ll be relied upon Friday night, when Grant hosts Crenshaw of Los Angeles in the first round of the City Section playoffs. DN: You guys are the only undefeated team remaining in the City Section, yet you were given the No. 4 seed in the City playoffs. Do you feel like you and your teammates were overlooked? AA: That we’re the best team in the City Section. A lot of people have doubted us, so winning it would be that much sweeter. We’re not overconfident, though. We know there are a lot of good teams out there that are just as hungry as us. DN: On Friday, you host 2004 City champion Crenshaw. Do you expect to be challenged in the first round? AA: We haven’t played them this season so we don’t know exactly what to expect. I’m sure they’ll be tough, but we’re confident we can play with anybody in the City Section. DN: Top seed Taft of Woodland Hills has won an area-best 19 consecutive games. You could potentially face them in the semifinals. Who would be favored if that game were to take place? AA: They’re the No. 1 seed. I guess that makes them the favorite. Hopefully, we can prove that theory wrong.
