Former champion jockey Dane Nelson, who recently returned from a successful riding stint in Canada, highlighted yesterday’s annual Jamaica Racehorse Trainers’ Association raceday at Caymanas Park with three winners.His winners were the front-running 6-5 favourite RUNJOHNNY RUN in the fourth race over the straight, this completing a double for trainer Errol Waugh, 4-5 favourite PLATINUM RECORD, who romped the ninth race over 1400 metres for maiden three-year-olds, and LUCKY NINE (made most) at 2-1 for trainer Gary Griffiths in the closing race over 1200 metres for the Trainers’ Association Trophy.Nelson’s triple comes on the back of a double at the Diamond Mile meet on December 10 when resuming his local campaign following an eight-month stint in Canada.LUCKY NINE UNLUCKYLUCKY NINE, unlucky in the fourth race on the previous Saturday, which saw the stewards disqualifying the first three past the post for causing interference to him, rebounded to win by 21/4 lengths from the 99-1 outsider MAJOR FORCE, with female jockey Andree Powell aboard. Highly-fancied MISS MYRTLE bolted prior to the start and was declared a late non-starter. The 3-2 favourite, PROUD PRESIDENT, ran below par to finish out of the frame.Meanwhile, highly fancied MONEY MAGNET, ridden by title-chasing apprentice Bebeto Harvey for trainer Richard Azan, won the opening Dye Job Sprint two-year-old race, while even money favourite WILL IN CHARGE captured the Seymour ‘Foggy’ Mullings O.J. Memorial Cup ahead of 2-1 second favourite BIRD CATCHER.Patrick Lynch, one of seven trainers honoured by the JRTA on the afternoon, saddled two winners, including the first two home (PLATINUM RECORD, KAMALI STAR) in the ninth race run in his honour. And young Harvey (60 wins) rode two winners to give himself an outside chance of catching long-time leader Omar Walker (67 wins) in the jockeys’ championship with four racedays remaining in 2016.
A 47 year old man was arrested in Letterkenny last night in connection with the investigation into the murder of Bogdan Michalkiawicz in May.Murdered: Bogdan MichalkiewiczThe man is detained at Letterkenny Garda Station under Section 4 of Criminal Justice Act 1984.He is the second man to be arrested in connection with the gruesome murder. The man was arrested in the Slieve Sneacht area of Letterkenny just after 9.30pm.Detective Inspector Pat O’Donnell said the man was arrested after being suspected of being involved in the murder of Bogdan.The Polish national was found at his apartment at Westside at Lower Main Street in Letterkenny.It is understood he had been stabbed a number of times. Inspector Michael Harrison described the murder as horrific and appealed for any help in tracing Bogdan’s killer.Meanwhile a reconstruction of the event will be aired on RTE’s Crimecall programme at 9.35pm tomorrow night (Tues).Anyone with information is asked to contact the incident room at Letterkenny Garda Sttaion on 074-9167170, the Garda Confidential Line 1-800-666-111 or any Garda Station.
