Boeing delivers first B737 MAX

first_imgPhoto: Boeing US planemaker Boeing has overcome the engine problems which threatened to derail its 737 MAX delivery schedule to hand over the first plane to launch customer Malindo Air.The B737 MAX 8 was handed over to the Malaysian full-service carrier at the manufacturer’s delivery centre in Seattle On Tuesday.Boeing issued a brief statement on the landmark event which failed to mention engine manufacturing problems that led to the entire Boeing 737 MAX fleet being grounded briefly last week.Malindo is a joint venture involving Indonesia’s Lion Air Group and Malaysia’s National Aerospace and Defence Industries. It began flying in 2013 and has expanded to operate a network of scheduled passenger services throughout Malaysia as well as to regional destinations in Indonesia, Thailand, Bangladesh, India, Singapore, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Australia and Pakistan. The leased plane is in Batik Air Malaysia livery ahead of the airline’s rebranding in the second half of this year. The plan is for Batik Air Malaysia to focus on international routes and provide Indonesian sibling Batik Airways with regional feeder trafficMalindo Air chief executive Chandran Rama Muthy said the airline’s fleet of Boeing 737NGs had served the carrier well and he believed the MAX would become the centrepiece of its fleet.“These new aircraft will allow us to go to further destinations and will play a key role in providing lower air fares to our customers,’’ he said. The engine manufacturing problem at a CFM contractor is seen as a minor glitch in a program that has run remarkably smoothly for the fastest selling passenger jet in Boeing’s history.US Media reports say about 30 LEAP 1B engines have been sent back to manufacturer CFM International for inspections because of concerns a manufacturing defect in a low-pressure turbine disc could lead to cracks. The US Federal Aviation Administration last week cleared aircraft fitted with the unaffected engines and Boeing has since confirmed that the 737 MAX  has resumed all flying activities.“Regulatory authorities have granted CFM and Boeing approval to begin the full range of business, test and certification-related flight activities,’’ the manufacturer told AirlineRatings. Boeing has received almost 3700 orders for the latest iterations of its single-aisle workhorse from 87 customers around the world. The debut of the MAX comes after its competitor, The Airbus A320neo, has been in service since early 2016.The 320neo has also had problems with one of its engine options, the Pratt & Whitney Geared Turbofan,  although its CFM LEAP-1A engines were unaffected by the problem seen with Boeing’s LEAP-1Bs.last_img read more

Wheat Tour Final

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest By Emily UnglesbeeDTN Staff ReporterMANHATTAN, Kan. (DTN) — The Kansas winter wheat crop could produce an average yield of 47.2 bushels per acre (bpa), according to the final estimate of the Wheat Quality Council’s Hard Red Winter (HRW) Wheat Tour. That’s up from USDA’s final yield of 38 bpa last year, when dry conditions hampered wheat yields early in the season. The wheat tour’s final estimate is an average of three days of wheat yield estimates produced by crop scouts who scouted and measured wheat throughout Kansas as well as southern Nebraska and northern Oklahoma. On the first day, crop scouts produced a yield estimate of 46.9 bpa, on the second day 47.6 bpa, and on the third, 46.2 bpa.Overall, the 74 participants on this year’s HRW wheat tour visited 469 fields. Muddy boots and wet pants quickly became routine, as scouts encountered unusually ample soil moisture in many parts of the state, although dryness has crept into some southwestern counties. In addition to yield, the tour’s participants each ventured a personal estimate of Kansas’s total final winter wheat production, for an average projection of 306.5 million bushels of wheat, up from USDA’s final estimate of 277 million bushels last year.Tour organizers and wheat industry leaders stressed that the yield and production estimates should be viewed as a useful snapshot of the crop’s potential at this particular moment — but much could change between now and harvest.“It gives an assessment of the crop at this point in time,” said Aaron Harries, vice president of research and operations for Kansas Wheat. “It’s the potential. If all things were to remain equal, this is what the number may be at the end of harvest. The problem is that, between now and then, we could have floods, rains, drought, hail, wind, disease, pests, and that wheat crop could have a lot to go up against.”Nearly half the crop is already battling the consequences of late planting: Many fields are short and running weeks behind normal development. One farmer in Marion County told scouts his fields weren’t planted until Nov. 1 — and they got 4 inches of snow a week later. His wheat field wasn’t at flag leaf yet this week, when it would normally be in boot stage or heading at this time of the year.Low prices have discouraged many growers from investing in these late-planted fields. In the south-central counties of the state, crop scouts viewed some fields that had been sprayed out with glyphosate, in order to plant to a different crop. Winter wheat acres, pegged at 7 million planted acres by USDA, could drop significantly before harvest. There is reason to remain optimistic, however. The spring has provided plentiful moisture and moderate temperatures so far, and if that trend continues — as forecasts suggest it will — it could benefit grainfill.“Winter wheat is a cool season grass,” Harries noted. “We have our biggest yields in Kansas when it stays nice and moderately cool in May and we have good rainfall, because that encourages the plant to produce more starch, which increases the yield.”These conditions do appear to be on the menu for the Southern Plains in the coming month, but the serving might be larger than desired, noted DTN Senior Ag Meteorologist Bryce Anderson.“I think the weather pattern over the next couple weeks is going to be less than ideal for the Southern Plains wheat crop,” Anderson said. “The forecast is cool and wet, with below-normal temperatures and above-normal precipitation. I don’t look for heat-related stress on the heading crop, but these conditions will keep the environment favorable for fungus and rust development that could affect the final yield prospects.”Disease is one of the biggest remaining wild cards for the crop, particularly for the late-planted fields, where producers may not be inclined to invest any more inputs.“Diseases will often build up to higher levels on that late-maturing wheat,” said Erick DeWolf, Kansas State Extension plant pathologist. “The amount of yield loss that occurs to the crop is also related to the time the disease begins damage. The earlier it gets established, particularly on the upper leaves, the greater the yield loss.”“The weather conditions we experience in the next couple weeks will really influence the amount of disease — and yield loss from it,” DeWolf added.Beyond the final yield and production numbers, the HRW Wheat Tour and its summer counterpart, the Hard Spring Wheat and Durum Tour, serve another purpose: to bring together the various arms of the grain industry, said Dave Green, executive vice president of the Wheat Quality Council and tour organizer. The 74 participants of the tour represented wheat industry groups, millers, bakers, grain marketing companies, universities, seed companies, federal and state government representatives and members of the media. You can reach Emily Unglesbee at Emily.unglesbee@dtn.comFollow her on Twitter @Emily_Unglesbee(CZ/BE)© Copyright 2019 DTN/The Progressive Farmer. iRex Launches New Wireless eReader – Coming to a Best Buy Near You

first_imgTags:#E-Books#web IRex officially launched its new eReader today. As we reported last month, the iRex DR800SG will feature an 8.1-inch touchscreen with stylus navigation, and have wireless connectivity over Verizon’s network. The device, which will retail for $399, will be closely linked to Barnes & Nobles’ eBook store and users will be able to buy books from there over the wireless connection. Best Buy will carry these devices in its stores and will set aside space in its stores to showcase eReaders from iRex, Sony, and other eReader manufacturers.Who is iRex?As Forrester analyst Sarah Rotman Epps point out, iRex has to overcome some challenges because its brand is relatively unknown in the US. According to the New York Times, iRex wanted to release a Barnes & Noble branded version of the DR800SG, but those negotiations apparently didn’t go very far. At the same time, though, iRex also has some advantages, especially in Europe – a market that other vendors have mostly ignored for now. Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Related Posts At this point, however, it’s not even really about the launch of yet another eReader anymore – with Amazon, Sony, Asus, iRex, Plastic Logic, Coolreaders, and a growing number of other contenders, the market is now wide open and competition is already bringing prices down. Prices now start at $149 for refurbished 1st generation Kindles and go up to $489 for the Kindle DX, with Amazon’s competitors hitting every price point in between. For most consumers, any price over $99 is still too high for an eReader, but then, hardware prices always come down sooner or later and it is only a matter of time before somebody is going to release a decent $99 eReader. At $399, the new iRex reader is obviously one of the more expensive readers on the market right now, though its price is in line with competing wireless eReaders like the Sony Reader Daily Edition. Sony, however, offers a real touchscreen on some of its high-end readers though, something iRex has disavowed for now because it reduces the contrast of the screen.Getting eReaders Into the MarketplaceAnother important aspect of this announcement is that Best Buy will now set apart some space in its stores to feature eReaders. Until now, Best Buy only sold eReader on its website. Even though public interest in eReaders is high, only a relatively small number of people have actually held one of these devices in their hands. Six families banished for opting out of local school

first_imgThe traditional tribal village authority of Kotlen in Kangpokpi district of Manipur has drawn flak for banishing six tribal families as a punishment for not sending their children to the local government school. They had put their wards in the school of the neighbouring Hengjol village. Village chieftain Dongjang Haokip asked the six families to leave by April 28, which they did after demolishing their tin-roofed houses.Tonglet Haokip, one of the victims, said that as there are not enough teachers, they had decided to send their children to the neighbouring village.Despite complaints by the victims, police are yet to intervene. The victimised families said the government school in the village is in a bad shape with two local youths, recruited as substitutes, looking after all the seven classes. District officials also admitted there were not enough teachers in the school. They further alleged that the chieftain, himself, was sending his children to schools in Imphal, the State capital. The victimised tribal families said they are taking shelter in Hengjol and Tintong Laijang villages. The village elders said the families had gone against the resolution of the authority that all parents shall send their children up to Class V to the local government school. The parents said they opted for the Tongsat Memorial Junior School in the neighbouring village about 1 km away. All the eight children of these six families are now studying there.last_img read more

Global Orderbook for Superyachts Cruising at a Steady Pace

first_imgzoom The global order book for superyachts continues to cruise at a steady pace this year, with interesting trends towards larger vessels and more high-tech engineering, according to a report by international classification society RINA Services.Although the 30 to 45-metre sector remains the core of the industry in terms of delivery numbers, there is an increasing demand for larger yachts over 60 metres. Around 40 mega yachts over 80 metres are under construction or being delivered this year. The large-project segment has boosted figures in Germany in particular, which leads the field in terms of gross tonnage. In terms of units, however, Italian shipyards remain the market leaders with a 45% share of the global order book. The trend for explorer or expedition yachts is also growing. A number of yards are now specialising in expedition yachts, which are often built to ice class and require specific features including helicopter pads, diving tenders and submarines.A large fleet and low prices mean interesting opportunities in the pre-owned yacht market, which is in turn boosting the refit and conversion sector.RINA is heavily involved in overseeing upgrades and refits to meet new environmental and safety standards such as the BWM Convention. Many owners even wish to exceed required standards. Demand for RINA’s additional class notations for environmental aspects, including Green Plusand Hybrid Propulsion, indicates a widespread desire to own a truly “green” vessel.“Along with environmental aspects, comfort is a major driver of innovation in superyacht design. Our consulting engineering services, in particular our specialist noise and vibration expertise, are increasingly requested as yachtbuilders strive to push the boundaries and meet the high standards of onboard comfort expected by today’s owners,” RINA said.A significant trend is to build or refit yachts, particularly those over 40 metres, according to the Charter Code. The charter market is expected to remain strong in Europe, the US and the Middle East.“Self-sailing yachts” may not yet exist, but technology is certainly lowering the barriers to entry into the yachting world. The so-called Internet of Things (IoT) will transform the yachting industry, according to RINA.Automation already makes it easier to navigate and control a yacht safely, so fewer crew members may be needed in coming years. Technical improvements such as joysticks and the azipod system allow less experienced owners to sail and berth smaller yachts themselves.“The most crucial challenge for all in the superyacht industry right now is to constantly raise quality standards. A product at this price should be delivered in perfect condition and come with perfect after-sales service,” RINA said.“RINA of course is involved and fully committed to this ideal and the process to reach it. Innovation and technological advance are the keys to unlocking this challenge and securing our future.”last_img read more

Killer whales spotted in Vancouver harbour searching out seals Ocean Wise

first_imgVANCOUVER — Several killer whales have been hanging out in Vancouver’s harbour, entertaining onlookers and feeding on seals, sea lions and other cetaceans.Dr. Lance Barrett-Lennard, director of Marine Mammal Research at Ocean Wise, says the predators called Bigg’s killer whales are discovering hotspots with an abundance of harbour seals and Vancouver’s harbour may be one of those areas. The whales have been spotted in the harbour twice, and Barrett-Lennard’s research team has identified a group of five that came in on Tuesday as being a matriarch and her four offspring, between two and 18 years old.The pod that visited the harbour last week was also a mother travelling with three sons born between 1984 and 1997.The researchers are able to identify each killer whale by the distinctive dorsal fins and white saddle patches on their backs.Bigg’s whales, also known as transients, are still listed as threatened under the Species at Risk Act but the population is recovering with about 300 animals, in contrast to southern residents, which feed mostly on chinook salmon. The Canadian Presslast_img read more

NFL Week 17 Playoff Implications Someone Has To Win The NFC South

The playoff situation is slightly more open in the AFC. The New England Patriots have clinched the top seed. And the Indianapolis Colts are locked into the fourth seed, where they will face either the Pittsburgh Steelers or the Cincinnati Bengals in the first round. A matchup with the Bengals looks slightly more likely at this point, with a probability of 60 percent. The San Diego Chargers’ playoff fortunes have swung wildly. Their probability of making the playoffs was as high as 76 percent in mid-October, but dropped to near single digits just a month later following some key conference losses. Going into Saturday night’s game against the San Francisco 49ers, the Chargers’ playoff chances were just 15 percent. In that game, San Diego overcame a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter to force overtime before winning on a Nick Novak field goal. With that victory, the Chargers now have a playoff probability of 41 percent going into their matchup this Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs, and a win guarantees the Chargers a playoff berth. However, if the Chiefs can win at home, their playoff chances stay alive, along with those of the Baltimore Ravens and the Houston Texans. With a total “swing” of 200 percentage points, the Chargers-Chiefs game is one of our top matchups this week: With just one week remaining in the NFL regular season, the playoff implications are fairly straightforward, and running thousands of simulations of Week 17 outcomes may seem like computational overkill. But the playoff field is far from settled, particularly the seeding, so a simulation model can still be helpful in sorting out the probable from the improbable.Speaking of improbable, the Atlanta Falcons and the Carolina Panthers will play for the NFC South division title this Sunday. They are No. 22 and No. 24, respectively, in our rankings based on the betting lines:The winner will most likely face the Arizona Cardinals in the first round of the playoffs, though there is still a 7 percent chance the NFC South winner will face the Seattle Seahawks instead. There are four NFC teams with any real chance at the conference’s top seed.1Technically there are five, but the Dallas Cowboys would need a tie between Detroit and Green Bay for a chance at the top seed — something that’s very unlikely. The Seahawks can clinch the top seed with a win over the St. Louis Rams. A Seahawks loss would boost the chances of securing home-field advantage throughout the playoffs for the Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers and the Cardinals. If you find the various clinching and elimination scenarios for your team too difficult to keep track of, we’ve made it easy on you. Use the interactive tool below for a quick summary of which games matter — including those that matter for the top draft pick.2The interactive does not include the 16 teams that have nothing to play for this week, which is all the teams already eliminated from the playoffs that don’t have a shot at the No. 1 pick, plus teams like New England and Indianapolis whose playoff position is set. The race for the first overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft is between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Tennessee Titans. The Buccaneers are the current favorite, owing to a weaker projected strength of schedule than the Titans. read more

This Years Patriots Are Almost On Pace To Be The GOAT

2Chicago Bears19426-01751 TEAMYEARRECORDELO AFTER 6 WEEKS 1Chicago Bears19866-01756 23Indianapolis Colts20056-01697 8Chicago Bears19435-0-11718 Once again, the New England Patriots find themselves atop the NFL heap: 5-0 so far this year with the league’s best points-per-game margin. Las Vegas oddsmakers consider New England far and away the best team in football. Excellence isn’t unfamiliar for the Pats; just last month, we anointed their 2007 squad1Unbeaten in the regular season. as the best single-season team in NFL history. But this year’s version is also one of the greatest teams in NFL history — through a season’s first six weeks.Of course, that last qualifier is important; the Patriots aren’t even a third of the way through their schedule, and you don’t win any prizes for being really good going into Week 7. On the other hand, the Patriots are really, really good.We can measure this using Elo ratings, one of our favorite metrics for ranking football teams. You can read the fine details of how they work here, but in a nutshell, Elo assigns each team a strength rating based on how likely it thinks that team is to win games in the future. The ratings are simple — their only inputs are the score, strength of opponent and location of each game — but they’re also predictive and self-correcting, so a team’s strength estimate is constantly evolving. And in the case of the 2015 Patriots, that rating is ridiculously good. Through the first six weeks of an NFL season,2Which technically encompasses only five games for the Patriots, because they had a bye in Week 4. only three teams have ever possessed a higher Elo rating than New England’s current mark of 1736: 5San Francisco 49ers19905-01734 19Green Bay Packers19626-01702 12New England Patriots20045-01714 7Denver Broncos19986-01724 11Miami Dolphins19735-11714 15Philadelphia Eagles19505-11711 9Pittsburgh Steelers19795-11717 16Miami Dolphins19846-01709 13Canton Bulldogs19236-01714 24New England Patriots20115-11695 25Cleveland Browns19515-11693 22Los Angeles Rams19686-01697 14Green Bay Packers19635-11713 18Minnesota Vikings19705-11707 3New England Patriots20076-01748 10Dallas Cowboys19944-11716 21Chicago Bears19415-11698 17Green Bay Packers19306-01708 4New England Patriots20155-01736 6Green Bay Packers20116-01728 20Chicago Bears19346-01698 I wrote three weeks ago, when they were 3-0, that this year’s Pats were unlikely to match the 2007 team’s 16-0 regular season record … and they still aren’t. (New England has roughly a 7 percent chance of going undefeated now.) But the Patriots are within striking distance of where the ’07 Pats were at the same point that season, and that ought to strike fear in the hearts of New England’s remaining 11 opponents.CORRECTION (Oct. 23, 10:50 a.m.): An earlier version of a table in this article listed the 1950 Philadelphia Eagles twice. One of the entries, which represented the Elo of the Eagles after five games, was incorrect and has been removed. The teams below that entry have each been moved up a slot, and the 2011 Patriots were added to the list as the 25th team.CORRECTION (Oct. 25, 1:25 p.m.): An earlier version of this article gave an incorrect record for the 1931 Green Bay Packers through the first six weeks of the season. The team was 6-0, not 7-1. The Packers’ Elo through those six weeks was too low for them to be in the top 25, so we have removed them, moved the teams below up a slot, and added the 1951 Cleveland Browns. read more

Football Ohio State defense needs to play at elite level to top

OSU’s defense watches a tipped ball that would then be intercepted by redshirt freshman cornerback Damon Arnette (3) during the first half of the Buckeyes game against Northwestern on Oct. 29. The Buckeyes won 24-20. Credit: Alexa Mavrogianis | Photo Editor“Defenses win championships” has been the motto adopted by numerous teams throughout sports that defines the winning attitude of a team. Ohio State is notorious for its own catch phrases to capture that final missing piece of motivation during its journey to a national title run.In 2014, it was “The Chase.” 2015 was “The Grind.” This season OSU has lived off of “The Edge,” which is where average stops and elite begins, coach Urban Meyer said in August. To defend and limit an offense as potent as Clemson’s, OSU defense has to surpass that edge on Dec. 31 in the Playstation Fiesta Bowl.OSU defense has already set a school record this season with seven interceptions returned for touchdowns. Co-defensive coordinator and associate head coach Greg Schiano implemented the “sideline return” play that has seized momentum-changing opportunities time and time again. Redshirt sophomore safety Malik Hooker has become one of the most dominant safeties in the country in his first season of significant playing time. He is responsible for three of the team’s seven pick-sixes this season, which is an individual school record. But it’s not necessarily just Hooker. Sophomore linebacker Jerome Baker has arguably been the most improved player this season, considering he didn’t start at the beginning of the year. An injury to junior linebacker Dante Booker put Baker in the lineup. Redshirt sophomore Marshon Lattimore has also excelled in his first season starting at cornerback. Schiano said when talking about Hooker, Baker and Lattimore, you’re talking about three elite athletes at their positions.Schiano and co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Luke Fickell have shared defensive play-calling duties this season that have led to the Silver Bullets being in the top 10 in the nation in several defensive categories, including third in total defense and scoring defense. The play of OSU’s secondary has been its saving grace at times this year. Hooker, Lattimore and company might have to be that safety blanket again up against a Clemson team that completes 27.9 passes and throws for 333 yards per game.“I’ve never coached a secondary as talented as this, and I’ve been doing this for 30 years,” Schiano said. “We had some talented ones in Miami (Florida), but this, to me, is the best.”It’s well known that Clemson junior quarterback Deshaun Watson is the keyholder to coach Dabo Swinney’s offense. Watson, a 2015 and 2016 Heisman finalist, is 30-2 as a starter when he finishes the game healthy. He has completed 67.6 percent of his passes for 3,914 yards with 37 passing touchdowns, which all rank in the top 10 in the country.Watson is without question the leader of the offense, but having wide receivers like Artavis Scott, Mike Williams, tight end Jordan Leggett and running back Wayne Gallman make the Clemson offense that much more terrifyingly difficult to defend. Scott, currently sitting at 592 receiving yards, likely needs just one catch to join Williams, Leggett and Deon Cain as the fourth Tiger receiver with 600 yards or more.To give some perspective on just how talented the Clemson receiving corps is, Clemson only had two receivers with at least 600 yards in 2011 when All-American quarterback Tajh Boyd had five NFL players — Sammy Watkins, DeAndre Hopkins, Dwayne Allen, Martavis Bryant and Jaron Brown — to throw to. Boyd accumulated over 3,800 passing yards in 2011 compared to Watson’s almost 4,000 yards this season.“They have athletes all around the field,” Baker said. “Great athletes, great quarterback, great running back, great receivers. They definitely have athletes pretty much everywhere at every position.”OSU allowed 226 yards against Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield, the nation’s leading passers in quarterback rating. During that game, OSU also shut down the other Oklahoma Heisman finalist Dede Westbrook who racked up just 51 yards on five catches against the Buckeye defense.Coach Meyer said his team wasn’t young anymore following the 42-24 victory at Oklahoma in September. He said his team was experienced. Schiano still believes his team is young, but thus far the defense has stood the test and he doesn’t have any reason to believe his playmakers won’t step up to the task at hand against the No. 2 Tigers.“I just look at (the defense) as we have a chance to keep getting better,” Schiano said. “If you get better every day, hopefully at the end you’re playing for it all.” read more
