We are looking forward to working with the City to move forward our vision.”The Collection at Independence’s transformative plan entails sweeping changes for the property.According to the release, in addition to adding technological and aesthetic upgrades throughout the common areas, a portion of the center’s interior in the Sears wing will be removed to allow for the construction of a restaurant streetscape that will house multiple upscale dining and retail options and combine indoor-outdoor elements. The removal will also allow for exterior facing retail entrances.Additional details outlined in the plan include constructing outparcel space along the property’s North end to be leased to all types of retailers, adding residential units along the West end to help address the shortage of housing available in Wilmington, building space near JC Penney to accommodate a hotel and a medical office building, and incorporating green space to create an authentic village-like lifestyle just minutes from the Atlantic Ocean.Given the extensive nature of the transformative plan, The Collection at Independence anticipates some of its current retailers will need to be relocated to accommodate the construction process. The property will remain open throughout the entire project.“Having been the General Manager of this property for over 23 years, I have never been more excited about the future of this property as I am today,” Lewis added. “The vision we outlined is unlike anything in the market and will ensure The Collection at Independence remains viable, relevant and an important fixture in this community for years to come.” 00:00 00:00 spaceplay / pause qunload | stop ffullscreenshift + ←→slower / faster ↑↓volume mmute ←→seek  . seek to previous 12… 6 seek to 10%, 20% … 60% XColor SettingsAaAaAaAaTextBackgroundOpacity SettingsTextOpaqueSemi-TransparentBackgroundSemi-TransparentOpaqueTransparentFont SettingsSize||TypeSerif MonospaceSerifSans Serif MonospaceSans SerifCasualCursiveSmallCapsResetSave Settings WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Demolishing Sears, removing a portion of the mall’s interior, adding new homes, a hotel, and more green space are just few of the renovation plans in the works for Independence Mall.According to a news release, The Collection at Independence announced a transformative repurposing plan for the center. 1 of 2 – Advertisement – The Collection at Independence (Photo: Contributed)last_img
